Why God’s Timing Is Worth the Wait

That’s a great question — why is His timing worth the wait? I know that sometimes when weighing things out, I don’t find some things worth waiting for.

Like, is it really worth waiting an hour and a half for a table at a restaurant? No, I don’t think so. Is it worth waiting for my package to be delivered next week when I can probably go to the store and get it tomorrow? No, I don’t think so.

But is it worth it for me to wait to receive what God has for me, rather than jumping ahead and trying to accomplish that thing on my own? Yes, it is worth the wait.

The only reason I know it’s worth the wait is because of the lessons I’ve learned from trying to make things happen on my own in the past.

If we jump ahead of God, we can miss the bigger blessing.

Psalm 27:14 – “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”

I was reading in Joshua, and I got to the part where God had brought down Jericho. He told the people not to take anything from the city they had just conquered. But one man, Achan, took some things. He knew he had done wrong, but his want and desire outweighed God’s command.

Because of this man’s lack of obedience, when the people went to the next town, God was not with them, and they lost several men in battle. In the end, Achan and his family paid the price for his disobedience.

The point of this is that when everything was made right again, God was with His people, and they were able to defeat the next town. And with that town, God said they could take what they wanted. If Achan had just waited on the Lord, he would have received the blessing from the Lord when the time was right.

Our temptation and impatience often keep us from the “wait.”

On the flip side of things, I think about King David and Joseph. Both men were called to something great, but the paths God laid out for them were not direct. Their journeys were full of difficult and painful circumstances, yet they remained diligent in keeping their eyes on the Lord because they knew that what God had planned must be great. Their patience was remarkable.

Of course, we don’t necessarily face these exact types of situations today, but our hearts and minds still work the same way. Our humanity can take over, and we can find ourselves acting like impatient brats.

I know that may sound a little harsh, but it’s true.

When we take things out of the hands of God, sometimes He allows us to experience the consequences. He knows the lessons we need to learn so that we can better depend on Him. Patience is definitely one of those lessons He teaches us over and over again.

I know there have been many times in my life when I had to learn the same lesson multiple times. First, because I needed to, and second, because the lesson was layered and I needed to see it from God’s perspective to fully understand it.

I’m telling you, my patience wore thin because I didn’t understand the reasoning until God opened my eyes and my heart. I was ready to throw in the towel and be done. But because I kept praying and seeking Him, God eventually showed me everything I needed to see.

Often, we may feel ready for certain things, but God isn’t ready for us to receive them just yet or We may not actually be as ready as we think we are.

We have to be patient and realize that God’s timing is perfect, and we need to depend on it far more than we often do.

Hebrews 10:35-36 – “So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.”
