Wait, Did I Just Read That?

ree

We’re diving into the wild, funny, and wonderfully human moments in Scripture where people messed up, got caught off guard, or made decisions that make us go, “Wait, what?!”

From a talking donkey to someone falling asleep during a sermon and falling out a window—yes, that really happened—today’s show reminds us that God works even through the awkward, messy, and hilarious. So, buckle up your Bible belts and get ready to laugh, reflect, and breathe a little easier knowing God uses imperfect people—because that's all He’s ever had to work with.

Main Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NLT) — “Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise.”

We’re kicking off with the moments that make us do a double-take—those "did that really just happen?" stories that are 100% in the Bible and 100% relatable.

How about this one—a donkey talks. Not metaphorically—literally. Balaam ignores warning after warning, until his donkey speaks up.

God tried so many times to get Balaam’s attention, but he wasn’t getting it, so God used his donkey.

God can use anyone—even a stubborn donkey.

When your ride starts giving you spiritual advice, it might be time to listen.

Paul was preaching, the room was warm, and a poor guy named Eutychus fell asleep and fell three stories.

I can relate… If I’m really tired and the room is warm, and I get still… I might find myself dozing off—but to fall out a window? That’s crazy.

God didn’t shame him—He healed him. Literally Paul ran down and revived this man who died... He said, "Don't worry he is awake"....Grace over embarrassment.

But I’d say that this is your sign to not sit by the window during a long sermon!

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter grabs a sword and goes full action movie on a soldier. Jesus calmly puts the guy’s ear back on.

Peter really said, “Not today, Satan,” and Jesus said, “Not like that, Peter.”

This is one of my favorite stories… Jesus is about to be arrested and go on to His crucifixion, and He calmly picks up an ear and reattaches it. This shows where His heart and mind were—for the Lord’s work.

Even in our missteps, like Peter, we can still be used by God.

It reminds us even the ‘heroes’ of faith had major oops moments. If they had blooper reels, we’d definitely be watching.

Main Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NLT) — “Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise.”

The Bible isn’t squeaky-clean perfection—it’s real, honest, and often weird and hilarious.

Here’s a classic one for you… Jonah tried to avoid God’s call and ended up in a fish for three days.

That’s the Old Testament version of “You can run, but you can’t hide.”

Have you ever experienced that? No, not being in a fish but you thought, I don’t think I heard that right, so I’m just gonna keep going on my way, just to then find yourself somehow doing what God was trying to get you to do all along.

Here’s the thing—you may take a detour, but God’s plan always finds you in some way or another.

Another kind of funny but awkward moment is when Sarah laughs at God.

Seriously when told she’d have a child in her old age, Sarah laughed. God heard. Then she denied it.

God: “Why did you laugh?”Sarah: “I didn’t!”God: “Yes, you did.”

Even in our doubt, God delivers on His promises—because His promises are true.

Then there’s when God told Moses to speak to the rock. Moses got mad and hit it instead. When passive-aggressive frustration meets obedience… kind of.

The Bible shows us over and over that even great leaders struggle—but God still brought the miracle.

We’re not called to be perfect—we’re called to be present and obedient.

We’ve laughed at these Bible moments today, but here’s the best part: God still used every one of those people. He doesn’t need perfection—He works through our humanness.

Main Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NLT) — “Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise.”

Sometimes worship isn’t polished—it’s passionate.

King David danced before the Lord with zero regard for how it looked—his wife thought it was embarrassing.

This shows us how worship should be. Don’t worry about what others think. Worship freely.

Then there’s the story where the disciple Thomas doubts that everyone saw Jesus after His resurrection… like everyone was pulling a prank on him or something.

But Jesus didn’t shame him—He met him in his doubt.

Then how about after Peter said he would never deny Jesus? He did it—not once but three times. But God still used him, and he became the rock the church was built on.

Peter messed up, but Jesus made breakfast for him later on the beach. God is so gracious, and His grace is greater than our failures and mistakes.

God doesn’t need you to be flawless. He just needs you to say yes—even after your blooper moments.

If you’ve ever felt like a walking blooper reel—congrats! You’re exactly the kind of person God loves to work through.

Well friends, if today reminded you of anything, let it be this: God is not surprised by your mess-ups. In fact, He’s famous for using them.

The Bible is full of real people with real mess-ups who were still chosen, still loved, and still used by God.

So, take heart. God knows your coffee order, your awkward moments, your impulsive mistakes—and He’s still calling you.
