Supplement: What Are You Adding In?

Today’s topic might sound like something from your local vitamin aisle — we’re talking about supplements! But not the chewy kind you take after breakfast. We're talking about the things we add into our lives to strengthen our faith, our character, and our hearts.

Just like our bodies need a little boost sometimes, our walk with God needs a little intentional supplementation too.

So, let’s open up our hearts and our minds and take a deeper look at what we’re adding into our everyday life.

Our scripture for today is 2 Peter 1:5-7 (NLT) – “In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone.”

Supplements are something we take because we’re lacking in a certain area — and that’s okay! The same goes for our spiritual life. We don’t have to pretend we have it all together.

Let’s be honest — some days, our patience is running on fumes. Or our joy needs a refill. We all have gaps, and it’s okay to admit that. The key is knowing where we need to grow and being open to God’s help.

I’ve taken — and still take — vitamins because I’m pretty sure I’m lacking in certain areas. But we also need to seek the Lord on what we need to supplement spiritually, whether it’s a devotional that is specific to your need or just what Scripture to help fulfill and strengthen you.

Let the Lord fill your need.

2 Peter 1:5-7 gives us a list of spiritual supplements: moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance... It’s like a multivitamin for your soul. And no, you don’t have to master them all overnight! In fact, the slower we learn and grow in these, the more likely we are to stick to it and remember all that we learned through it.

Which one do you feel the weakest in? Maybe choose that one to focus on this week and see how God changes things for you.

Sometimes we think we’re helping ourselves by adding more busyness, more distractions, more opinions. But not all supplements are good ones!

Let’s ask: What am I taking in that’s actually draining me? What am I doing that I can actually step back from?

Supplementing your faith doesn’t have to be complicated. It could look like a morning prayer, a gratitude list, or calling a friend instead of scrolling. These little add-ons make a big difference over time.

Something to consider is — are you consuming too much noise and not enough peace?

As a tip — start with five minutes a day focused on growing one area — and see how it changes you.

How do the small things we add — the ‘supplements’ — build up over time? You don’t get strong from one workout or wise from one prayer.

It takes time and effort to see change.

It’s the little things added daily that matter most.

Let’s talk about adding grace — for ourselves and others. Some of us are great at giving it away… and terrible at receiving it. We’re not meant to be perfect; we’re meant to be growing.

Just like saving money or eating well, small, good choices stack up. Five minutes of prayer. One act of kindness. One Bible verse. Over time, they change your heart.

I used to think I needed a big plan for spiritual growth, like I needed to pray and read and hear from the Lord every time — but turns out that five minutes in the car with worship music did more for me than I expected, because of where my heart was in it. I find it to be more fulfilling to be fully present when spending time with the Lord.

What’s one way you can be gentler with yourself this week when it comes to making time for the Lord?

Ever taken a vitamin that needs food to absorb properly? Same goes with spiritual supplements — we need community, prayer, and support to help it “stick.”

If you are struggling today, reach out to someone who builds you up in faith. Let them walk with you.

Also, sometimes before we can add good things, we need to let go of some toxic ones — bitterness, anxiety, comparison. God wants to walk with you and fill those gaps with peace, joy, and truth.

Make a list and pray about it, and see what needs to go and what needs to come in.

Let’s talk about living that well-supplemented life — spiritually healthy, emotionally grounded, and faith-filled. This isn’t about perfection. It’s about giving God space to grow something new in you.

Just like we might take our morning vitamins, we need to check in with our daily spiritual intake. Are we feeding our souls? Are we making time to be refreshed? Are we seeking the Lord and listening to what He says?

Faith, like health, isn’t a quick fix. It’s a lifestyle. The more we add the good things in, the stronger we become when life gets hard.

What does the first 15 minutes of your day look like?

Don’t wait for a crisis to grow your faith — grow it now.

Don’t keep the good stuff to yourself! Share what’s helping you — a podcast, a verse, a reminder. We were never meant to grow in isolation.

When we don’t have enough — energy, peace, wisdom — God fills the gap. He supplements what we lack with His grace, power, and presence. He’s not an extra — He’s essential.

Share something uplifting with someone today — a song, a verse, or a text.

You don’t have to carry it all. Let Him strengthen you.

Today’s reminder: You don’t have to be everything all on your own. Like any good supplement, the goal is to support your growth — not to pressure yourself into perfection. Let God show you what to add, what to release, and how to live a spiritually nourished life.
