Spring Cleaning: Inside and Out

Spring Cleaning: Heart and Home

We’re breaking out the brooms—not just for the dust bunnies under the couch, but for the clutter in our hearts, too. That’s right, it’s time for a little spring cleaning—spiritually and practically.

Whether your garage is overflowing or your patience is running thin, today’s a good day to let God help us clear out the old and make room for the new. Let’s have some fun with it!

Psalm 51:10 (NLT) — “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.”

Let’s start with what we can see—closets, drawers, and yes... that mysterious Tupperware cabinet that multiplies at night. Well actually the lids multiply and the Tupperware disappears.

Anyway, we all have that one drawer—the catch-all for pens, expired coupons, batteries, and keys to who-knows-what. But spiritually? We’ve got junk drawers, too—old wounds, toxic thoughts, and guilt we didn’t realize we were still carrying.

What’s in your spiritual junk drawer that needs tossing?

Dust settles when things go untouched for too long. Ever moved a couch and been shocked at what was hiding underneath?

In the same way, parts of our lives can collect dust—dreams we’ve forgotten, prayers we haven’t prayed, or habits we’ve let slip.

Choose one thing you’ve been avoiding and give it 10 minutes of attention today.

We’re going beyond surface-level dusting now. This is deep-cleaning territory—baseboards, corners, and the places no one sees.

Spiritually, that’s our heart—the areas we try to hide from others and even from ourselves. But God already sees them, and He comes not with shame, but with love. Not with a scolding, but with a sponge and a smile, saying, “Let’s clean this up—together.”

Open the windows and let that spring breeze in! Fresh Air, Fresh Perspective.

Sometimes a little fresh air makes everything feel new again. God's Word is the same—it clears the fog, resets our thinking, and brings peace.

Just the other day, I was wishing it wasn’t so humid outside so we could open our windows and let a fresh breeze run through the house.

Does your house feel a little stale sometimes? Take 5 minutes today, read a favorite verse, and just breathe. Ask God for fresh eyes and a renewed perspective.

Psalm 51:10 (NLT) — “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.”

So much of our stress comes from mental clutter—worry, comparison, to-do lists that never end. Spring cleaning our minds means surrendering anxious thoughts and simplifying where we can.

The best part of cleaning? The space it opens up. When we declutter spiritually, emotionally, and physically, we make room for the new things God wants to bring—peace, joy, clarity, connection… even just a calmer schedule.

Write down 3 things you’re overthinking—and release them to God.

Now write 3 things you’re holding onto—and surrender those, too.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about once-a-year resets. It’s about building daily habits that help us live lighter, freer, and more in tune with what God’s doing in our hearts.

Just like wiping down kitchen counters, we can do heart-checks each day. A quick prayer. A kind word. A moment in Scripture.

These things go a long way in keeping our spiritual lives clean and joyful.

God isn’t waiting for big, dramatic changes—He’s already in the everyday rhythms. He’s in the laundry, the dishes, the morning coffee. Talk to Him while you clean. Play worship music while you vacuum. Let Him be part of your routine.

Don’t wait until everything’s perfect to feel proud. Tossed some junk mail? Woohoo! Chose joy instead of snapping at your kid? That’s a win. God is cheering you on every step of the way.

Spring is a season of renewal, and cleaning is one way we live that out. As you move through the week, keep asking:

What can I let go of? And what fresh thing is God inviting me into?

Spring cleaning isn’t about perfection. It’s about renewal. About clearing space for peace, grace, and fresh purpose. God loves working with messy hearts—and He’s the best cleaner there is.

So, grab that duster, say a prayer, and let today be the start of something fresh.
