Have you ever heard those stories of people who are color blind and get glasses to help them see color, or how deaf people get hearing aids of some sort and hear for the first time. Those are some amazing stories and those who are receiving those gifts of sight or hearing just become so overwhelmed with their new perspective.
A.W. Tozer said this, “The world is waiting to hear an authentic voice, a voice from God – not an echo of what others are doing and saying, but an authentic voice.
The gift of sight and hearing are amazing things to have physically and spiritually.
When I think about these stories of people getting to see color or hear for the first time it reminds me of the time when we first hear God’s voice, or our eyes are open for the first time to seeing His miracles.
God is always working and sometimes we see it and sometimes we just don’t. Hearing other people’s stories about how they heard or saw God’s workings amazes me. I think, “Oh man how I would love to experience something so great.” Well honestly, I have experienced it. It may not have been something grand, but it was still God moving and working in my life.
For example, I saw a story about this lady who collects gifts for children every Christmas, but she had a house fire and lost it all and wasn’t able to give anything. The person she was telling this to decided that he wanted to give her some money to purchase those gifts. The lady just cried. She was in disbelief but so grateful at the same time. God is always working.
We can get caught up in that grand gesture type of stuff, and in that we can miss what God has done in even everyday things. We don’t need to just focus on the big open our eyes and ears to the small moments being made…. Those but small moments can lead to a big one. Like this story this lady’s small gesture of gifts at Christmas were big for the kids and this guy’s gift to this lady may have seemed small to others but in reality, it was big for the lady because then she should turn around and bless others.
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Sometimes hearing God isn’t about His volume but about our stillness and attentiveness.
We need to cultivate an awareness of God and then we will be more likely to see more of the big and small movements He is doing in our lives.
One of the primary ways we hear from God is through His Word. Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” The Bible is God’s voice in written form, speaking truth into our hearts and lives.
When we read Scripture, we aren’t just reading ancient texts—we’re hearing from God Himself. It’s a direct line of communication between the Creator and His creation. His Word brings guidance, comfort, and clarity, and it’s one of the most reliable ways to hear His voice.
There have been so many times in my life when I’ve opened the Bible looking for direction, and a verse just jumped out at me—like God was speaking directly to my situation. It’s amazing how God uses His Word to speak to us in personal ways.
Sometimes after I read something and I haven’t noticed that God was pointing something out He will make it known to be to be something I need to pay attention to by letting it show up in other things like whatever book I’m reading, or in conversations, and even in the Sunday sermon. Then I’m really paying attention because it has been repeated to me.
Has there be a recent scripture that God has pointed out to you lately?
For me right now it is the book of Joshua, and the work God did in that book. So, I’m gonna be looking into it more to see what God has for me in that.
1 Kings 19:11-12 gives us the story of Elijah hearing God in a gentle whisper. After the wind, earthquake, and fire, it says, “And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out.”
God speaks to all of us. He knows the best way to get our attention, and God doesn’t always speak to us in loud, dramatic ways. Sometimes, He speaks in the stillness, in the quiet moments of life. It’s easy to miss His voice if we’re always surrounded by noise and busyness. Learning to be still before God is key to hearing Him.
I know in my own life, it’s when I’ve slowed down and made intentional space for quiet time with God that I’ve heard Him most clearly. Whether in prayer, reflection, or just a quiet moment, God’s gentle whisper can guide us if we’re listening.
So, like those who get those glasses to see or hearing aids to hear for the first time we need to be looking and hearing for God with a new perspective.
Let’s learn to walk so closely to God that we hear His whisper.
God is always speaking and revealing Himself to us if we are willing to hear and see Him. As you go about your day take some time to seek the Lord and tune your hearts to hear from Him.
