Security - Identity in Christ

ree

Today we’re talking about Security — finding our identity in Christ rather than in things or circumstances.

We have so many ways to be identified… our driver’s license, our Social Security number, our face for apps, our emails and passwords. All of these identify us outwardly. But when we talk about our identity in Christ, we’re talking about our faith, our relationship with Him, and our love for the Father.

We need to remember to carry that identity with us as surely as we carry our DLs.

Your worth is anchored in who Jesus says you are. He looks at the heart — He really knows — and we can trust His assessment.

I find our dog a little annoying. Our kids love her, so she is tolerated. But my oldest likes to get some validation from me about the dog… I’m not sure why he needs it (it’s not like she understands what I’m saying), but either way, he wants to hear it from me.

I mention this because sometimes we seek validation in the oddest places — from people, situations, or things that can’t actually give us the security we need.

The good news is this: when others are seeking validation, we can offer the gift of being present. Some people simply need the security of being heard — and as a middle child, I can relate. When someone actually heard me, it helped me understand myself better.

So if you notice someone seeking today, and you’re able, jump in and let them know they're seen and heard.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I put blinders on to how God sees me. I start viewing everything only through my perspective — and that can be harmful.

So let’s start our mornings by asking God to help us see ourselves and others through His perspective, so our own thoughts don’t get in the way.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us, “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”

Well… I wish I saw that masterpiece every time I looked in the mirror. Seriously — if I saw that, maybe I’d understand more deeply that I am chosen and known by God.

But since I don’t, I’ll focus on the truth of God’s Word and grow in believing it more and more.

Where do you fall — are you someone who keeps track of everything? Someone who loses everything? Or somewhere in between?

I used to track things well, but the older I get, the more I find myself forgetting. I’ve looked for my phone WHILE talking on the phone. Just the other day, I handed my daughter my phone and then immediately asked where it was… she laughed at me. I’m blaming age.

We can let these little lapses define us if we’re not careful. They can shake our confidence.

There’s a young girl I know who discovered she could sing. She started down that path, but her confidence wavered because she was still learning. After she received some encouraging affirmations, she sounded like a different singer.

The same applies to us. Sometimes we struggle to keep track of ourselves — and who we are in Christ — when we’re learning something new. But once we grow in confidence and assurance that God is with us and equips us, everything changes. Suddenly, we can do what once felt impossible.

So here’s a reminder to carry with you:

“My identity is secure in Christ — not in what I do.”

I go to the gym every afternoon, and I’m glad baggy sweats are back. Not that they were ever out for me, but now at the gym I don’t feel like a complete frump for not wearing tight clothes — that’s just not me.

But these are the things we think about, right?

Why does it matter? It doesn’t… but comparison creeps in so easily.

God does not compare us. Comparison is something the enemy uses to distort our view and shake our sense of identity.

Remember — you are made in the image of God. You don’t need to measure yourself against anyone else. You just need to follow His lead.

Our family has had a rough few months — two family members passed away, my husband got sick, and then needed a wisdom tooth removed. We could focus on all of it and wonder why, or when it will get better.

But we’re not doing that.

Someone texted me recently and said they admired how we were handling everything — they didn’t understand how we were staying steady.

I gave a simple reply: “It’s because of God.”

My faith in God doesn’t shift because of my circumstances — it digs in deeper, because I know He is in control.

Your identity and faith don’t weaken because of circumstances, my friend. Through Christ, they become stronger.

Something that really helps me is remembering that God is unchanging.

When someone truly sees you, understands you, and never changes — that gives you confidence.

And if God, who is steady and unchanging, calls me His own, then I can rest secure in that relationship.

Let’s take a moment to pray:

Lord,Thank You for always being with me. Thank You for being the constant in my life — the One who brings stability and security as I learn who I am in You. You keep me grounded and You fill me with truth. Thank You for Your unchanging love and mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

We have a song here at KJIC — well, several — but one in particular asks the question, “Heaven, are you listening?”

I was talking with someone once who asked if I’d ever opened my mailbox to find exactly what I needed. I said no, and they shared a story about a pastor who prayed and gave his needs to the Lord — and one day, opened his mailbox to find a check for exactly what he needed.

Though that exact thing has never happened to me, there have been countless moments where God has placed exactly what I needed right into my hands.

God meets us in moments of need — and in those moments, we remember who we are to Him… loved, held, and cared for.

Let’s ask ourselves:

“Where do I most need to be reminded of my identity in Christ?”

And as we seek that answer, remember: through Christ, you can be steady, unshakable, and secure in His love.

When you walk closely with God, you will grow confident in who you are in Him.
