Restoring Homes, Rebuilding Hope

Updated: May 13

KJIC had the joy of supporting one of our CROP members, 4B Disaster Response Network, at the Open House of their newly renovated facility in Texas City. We brought The Crew along and spent the day welcoming visitors, sharing smiles, and celebrating all that this expanded space will make possible in the surrounding communities.

4B was born out of Hurricane Harvey in 2017, when churches and organizations across the region came together to meet urgent needs. Homes were mucked out, meals were provided, laundry was done, and rebuilding began. But recovery after disaster is never quick. While 4B teams worked on over 1,800 Harvey-damaged homes—completely rebuilding 504 of them—there are still homes in our community, eight years later, that remain unrepaired. 4B continues to actively address this need while preparing for future disasters.

Ready for What’s Next

4B ministers to individuals and families from the Beltway to the Beach, and from the Bay to Brazoria County. They primarily serve single-parent households, the elderly, veterans, those with disabilities, and families facing financial hardship.

With their thoughtfully designed facility, 4B can now store the tools, equipment, and supplies necessary to carry out extensive rebuilding efforts. Even more exciting—they can now host up to 100 volunteers on-site. This means help can come from outside disaster zones without the burden of finding lodging.

But That’s Not All!

Their impressive commercial kitchen will be able to prepare up to 3,000 meals a day, feeding both volunteers and the surrounding community during times of need.

They’ve also included a beautifully designed apartment and a small efficiency unit for an on-site caretaker. These additions allow families whose homes are under repair to temporarily live on-site in comfort. Their belongings can be securely stored in the facility's warehouse, while construction crews work quickly and efficiently—without the limitations of families still living in the space or needing to find alternative housing.

The 4B Model: A Three-Phase Process

4B’s recovery process is structured in three key phases:

  • Phase 1 – Muck Outs: Removing debris and anything that got wet (like sheetrock, flooring, and furniture) and drying out the home.

  • Phase 2 – Safe, Sanitary, and Secure: Ensuring electrical systems function safely, water is accessible, drains are working, and doors and windows can be closed and locked.

  • Phase 3 – Rebuilding: Fully restoring the home to its pre-disaster condition.

Serving Even Without a Disaster

When they’re not responding to a crisis, 4B continues to serve the local community through their First Saturday Serve, a monthly outreach event that meets various needs in the region.

With only four part-time employees, everything 4B accomplishes is through the dedication of incredible volunteers.

We also had the pleasure of meeting the Lighthouse Charity Team. They are truly "People Serving People"! According to their website: The Lighthouse Charity Team is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization that provides volunteers and cooking equipment for causes that benefit the Galveston County area during disasters and community-building efforts.

Seeing their smiling faces serving 4B was a blessing to all who came out for the Open House! What a delight to see ministries coming alongside one another to accomplish so much more than can be done alone.
