Pursue God

We pursue a lot of things in life, don’t we? — there’s success, security, answers, peace.
But the truth is, everything our hearts are searching for is found in God.
Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
Pursuing God is intentional. It’s steady. It’s personal — it’s about drawing closer to His heart.
Just like the dawn always breaks and the spring rains always return, Matthew reminds us that when we seek God sincerely, He will always respond.
There’s that saying, “Stop and smell the roses.” It’s a reminder that in the middle of pursuing things, we have to slow down…
When we pursue things, we tend to make our lists and jump in and rarely slow down.
Think about the tortoise and the hare story — they are racing to the finish line, and the tortoise takes its sweet time, and the hare rushes ahead and then stops, rushes and then stops. He thinks he’s going to win, only to get to the end and see that the tortoise, who was slow and steady, beat him. He’s confused, but maybe it was because he rushed and missed something.
We don’t have to rush through anything. We can be slow and steady as we seek the Kingdom of God and live for Him. This way, we don’t miss a thing.
Sometimes I don’t know what I’m doing… I just struggle my way through and hope for the best.
I will pray and read my Bible; I will watch and scroll; I will even just sit and stare. I’m doing all I can to figure out why I can’t get my thoughts together.
It sounds like I’m doing some of the right things, but am I really?
Reading the Bible and seeking the Lord in prayer are great things to do, but in my pursuit, am I in the right heart and mindset? Am I even asking the right questions?
The answer is right there with the Lord, and I do try to figure it out, but my pursuing might involve a little too much of me. I might be getting in my own way so that pursuing seems hard, but it’s not — because the Lord is right there waiting for me to get out of the way so I can hear Him.
So often I’m reminded that I need to get out of the way and let God.
Have you ever had your dog get out of the house and just take off running, and you or someone in your house has to go on this ridiculous foot pursuit to get the dog — and it takes way longer than it should?
We’ve had this happen multiple times with our dog.
Now, when you’re pursuing a dog, you have to be a little sneaky because they’re great at evasive maneuvers. But when we pursue God, it’s not as complicated. It might feel that way sometimes, but it’s really simple — reading the Bible, having conversations with God, and learning about Him.
All I’m saying is God is a little easier to pursue than a dog that just wants to run, because at least God won’t run from you — He will welcome you with open arms.
When seeking God, there is a difference in knowing about God and knowing God.
You can study His Word, attend church, listen to worship — and still feel distant. But when you pursue God personally and daily — something shifts.
It’s like knowing someone and being someone’s best friend or spouse. Basically, when you know God, He is more than an acquaintance.
Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
When pursuing God, there will be some days when you’ll feel close; other days, you might feel nothing at all. This happens in every relationship, and we know that doesn’t mean to stop — that’s when we actually need to keep going.
And when you seek Him simply for who He is — you discover a relationship that changes everything.
Have you ever watched the wildflowers in a field?
They open up every morning when the sun is up, and they follow the sun all day long, and then they close up when the sun goes down.
They do this day after day after day. They open up and pursue the sun because they know that light is what helps them make it through the day.
We need to be the same way. Every morning, we should open our hearts and pursue the Son — Jesus — because His light helps us make it through the day.
With God always in our sight, we will have hope and peace.
I think my husband thinks that I do all I can to pursue and get as many sweatpants and hoodies as I possibly can. He doesn’t understand that I love comfy clothing.
I restrain myself all the time because I don’t like to spend money… but if you look at my wardrobe, you will find a lot of jackets, sweaters, t-shirts, and sweatpants.
As much as my husband notices that, I also hope that he notices my pursuit of Jesus as well.
I can walk around in all the comfy clothes I want to, but if my life and my attitude are not displaying the fact that I am seeking God, then what am I doing?
So as much as I love comfort, I love seeking the Lord even more — because that’s where true comfort is found.
Pursuing God takes time, just like any meaningful relationship.
It means making space for Him — in the quiet, in your thoughts, in the middle of your everyday routine.
Matthew 6:33 says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
You can pursue God while driving to work, folding laundry, or walking outside. The goal isn’t to add more to your day — it’s to invite Him into it.
When you live with a heart that says, “Lord, I just want to know You more,” you’ll begin to see Him in places you never noticed before — like while you’re cooking and listening to your kids laugh in the background.
His fingerprints are everywhere.
And the more you pursue Him, the more you realize — He’s been pursuing you all along.
How many of you have that one person you always call when you get in the car?
I don’t usually call anyone, but I have heard that a lot of people do this.
So, every day you and the other person have basically set aside time to talk to each other and catch up. You’ve set aside time to keep up that relationship.
Do you have the same thing set up with God? I mean, do you have a time every day when you talk with God and just catch up and pray? Maybe that is something we can think about and maybe carry with us.
Let’s all pursue God in a way that becomes like making a phone call to a friend while driving around.
When thinking about pursuing, I’m not sure why, but I thought of a hunter. That hunter goes out with a plan. That hunter sits there quietly for hours and just waits for the moment to do what needs to be done.
God knows you, and as He pursues you, He knows the exact moment when He will have your full attention. Once He knows that moment is coming — when you are fully listening — He speaks life into you and lets you know that He is there.
Just as you pursue God, He pursues you. He wants you to know that He is always with you, ready to seize the moment and have that relationship with you.
Matthew 6:33 gives us the encouragement we need to keep pursuing God.
Pursuing God isn’t a race — it’s a relationship. It’s about walking with Him, talking with Him, and trusting that He’s near — even when you can’t feel Him.
And here’s the promise: “He will give you everything you need.” That means He provides it all.
So, keep showing up. Keep seeking.
Because the more you pursue Him, the more your heart finds what it was made for — peace, purpose, and the steady joy of knowing the One who never stops pursuing you.
