Our Way vs God's Way

Today, let’s talk about choosing between our way and God’s way. We like control. We like making our own plans. But when we follow our own way instead of God’s, we often find ourselves lost, exhausted, and frustrated. On the other hand, when we surrender and trust in God’s way, we find peace, purpose, and direction.

“There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.” — Proverbs 14:12

Are you walking in God’s way or your own? Let’s dive into this together and discover how to align our steps with His!

We often make decisions based on what seems best to us, but without God’s guidance, we can end up in the wrong place.

We need to be careful when we think our way feels right but isn’t.

“You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.” — Proverbs 19:21

The world encourages independence, but God calls us to dependence on Him.

Before making a big decision, take it to God in prayer first.

Have you ever followed your own way, only to realize later that it wasn’t best?

“Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight!” — Psalm 32:1

When we insist on doing things our way, we can fall into disobedience.

God forgives, but our disobedience often has consequences.

We see this displayed so many times in the Bible, but one story we can look at is Jonah. He ran from God’s way and ended up in the belly of a fish.

Are there areas in your life where you need to realign with God?

If you realize you’ve gone the wrong way, turn back to God quickly.

Trusting God's Wisdom Over Ours

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

Our understanding is limited; God sees the full picture. It’s like looking at something with blinders on versus seeing without them. We see everything with a limited view, but God sees all without limitations.

Trusting God means surrendering our plans, even when we don’t understand.

Write down one area where you struggle to trust God and pray over it.

Where in your life do you need to trust God’s wisdom over your own?

We’ve seen the danger of following our own way, but what does it look like to walk in God’s way? Let’s explore that now.

God’s Way Leads to Life

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” — Psalm 119:105

God’s way brings life, peace, and purpose. His Word is our guide—it lights the path ahead.

When you don’t know what to do or where to go next, spend time in Scripture daily to help you stay on God’s path. God brings clarity, not confusion. The path is clear to Him, and we just need to ask for His help and wisdom.

Are you letting God’s Word guide your decisions?

Following Jesus’ Example

Even Jesus surrendered to the Father’s will.

“I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those He has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. For it is my Father’s will that all who see His Son and believe in Him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.” — John 6:38-40

If we want to walk in God’s way, we must follow Jesus’ example.

Jesus' mission was to fulfill the Father's will, as stated in the scripture above, which includes not losing anyone given to Him by the Father and raising them up at the last day.

Jesus' statement underscores the importance of aligning our will with God’s, as this is the path to fulfilling a meaningful purpose.

So, when faced with a decision, ask, “What would Jesus do?” Seek God’s will and stay on the path He gives you.

How can you align your daily choices with God’s will?

“Then He said to the crowd, ‘If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.’” — Luke 9:23

What is one area where you need to commit your way to the Lord?

As any typical new parent, I had a vision of how I would parent. I thought I could keep things in control, and with one kid, it was really no problem. But once I suddenly had more, all my thoughts and plans went out of control. Once I realized that I was no longer in control, there were a lot of meltdowns… from both the kids and me! But when I fully learned to trust God with my kids, my thought process changed, and life suddenly became so much easier. God has been faithful ever since.

Take a moment to reflect on where you need to surrender to God.

Choosing God’s Way Daily

Choosing God’s way isn’t a one-time decision—it’s a daily walk. Let’s talk about how to keep following Him every day.

“Finally, dear brothers and sisters, we urge you in the name of the Lord Jesus to live in a way that pleases God, as we have taught you. You live this way already, and we encourage you to do so even more.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:1

Every decision, big or small, should honor God.

Walking in God’s way requires consistency, not just occasional obedience.

Start each day with a prayer of surrender to God’s will.

What small choices can you make today that honor God?

God's Way Brings Peace

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You! Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal Rock.” — Isaiah 26:3-4

Following God’s way brings a peace the world can’t offer.

Even in trials, we can have peace when we trust Him.

When you feel anxious, remind yourself of God's promises.

Where do you need to trust God’s peace over your own understanding?

Staying the Course

The Christian walk is a lifelong journey, and we need encouragement to stay the course.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of His return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to His appearing.” — 2 Timothy 4:7-8

Staying in God’s way takes perseverance, but the reward is eternal.

Surround yourself with believers who encourage you to follow God’s way.

Who in your life helps keep you accountable in your faith?

We’ve talked about the difference between doing things our way and following God’s way. Our way may seem right, but only God’s way leads to life, peace, and purpose.

Surrender isn’t always easy, but when we trust God, we can rest knowing He is leading us in the best direction.

God’s way isn’t always the easiest, but it’s always the best.

Walk in God’s way today.
