John 10:14-15 says, “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.”
We have a flock of Dorper sheep. They know all of us and especially recognize us when it’s feeding time. Anytime our sheep get out (which only happens if the gate is accidentally left open), they end up coming up to the house to graze. They don’t go too far past what they know, and they come to where they know we are.
John 10:3-5 says, “The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”
When a sheep knows its shepherd, it recognizes him. It knows his voice and trusts its shepherd.
We have ducks—stay with me here. They know us; we have raised them and fed them their entire lives, but they are not like the sheep. Because we didn’t pick them up and carry them around every day, they run from us and are skittish. They don’t fully trust us.
We are like this as well. We can trust those who nurture and care for us, who know and accept us with all our flaws and mistakes. But other times, we don’t trust because the same care was not given or shown by some.
Jeremiah 17:7 says, “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.”
When it comes to God, we can trust Him fully. He has cared for us like no one ever has or ever will. His love for us runs deeper than any love, and it is an unfailing love. Trust in the Lord and let Him be your Shepherd.
Like sheep, we have needs, and we need a Shepherd to guide us. We can supply some things, but God is our provider of all things. We need to let God guide us and know that He is our good Shepherd.
John 10:27-28 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me.”
He knows your name. He knit you together. He provides all you need. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. He is always looking after us and guiding us, even in things we don’t see. He is a faithful and good Father. Listen for Him and follow Him.
