Learning Something New

ree

You know that feeling when you try something new and it’s just… awkward? Whether it’s learning a new skill, adjusting to a new routine, or diving deeper into your faith, it can be uncomfortable at first. But that’s how growth works. Proverbs 1:5 reminds us that even the wise keep learning. That scripture in full says, “Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance.”

There’s always more God wants to show us, teach us, and reveal through our everyday moments. Learning something new isn’t just about knowledge; it’s about transformation.

So today, let’s talk about staying open to what God’s teaching us, even when it feels a little unfamiliar.

As a parent, I think about all the things my kids have learned and how much more they need to learn.

I may have walked through life ahead of them and can teach them things, but in the end of it all, there is a lot they have to learn on their own.

That can be hard to watch, but it is important to keep in mind that they have their own path that God has for them, their own lessons that need to be learned so that they can apply them to their lives.

We can teach them, but they will have to learn a lot on their own. We can just make sure they are equipped with God’s Word so they can walk through it all with Him.

Life is a series of lessons to learn and unlearn.

We go through phases in life where we think we want this or that, just to realize that we should keep some but not all of what we thought we wanted.

God points out things within our lives that we shouldn’t have and then some things we should adopt.

Be open to what God is teaching you; He knows exactly what is needed. Be willing to obey and follow through with where God is pointing you and changing you. His ways are better than our ways.

Live a life led by God and soak up all you can from Him.

Every time I learn a new skill, I try my best to stay aware that I don’t have to get it right the first time and that there will be trial and error, but you learn and move forward.

BUT… just because I think that doesn’t mean I follow through with it. One mistake and I really beat down on myself because, though I didn’t mean to set an expectation, I did.

Not sure why I do this, but I do. Of course, I learn from what I did wrong so that next time I will not do it again, and that is great, but I have yet to learn not to set an expectation on myself… maybe one day.

Give yourself grace is all I’m trying to say.

Learning something new means giving yourself permission to be a beginner again. That’s hard, right? We like to have things figured out. But God often uses those “new” seasons—the ones where we’re unsure—to shape our faith. He teaches patience, humility, and trust in the process. It’s not about mastering everything right away; it’s about being teachable and letting Him lead.

The scripture of Proverbs 1:5 (NLT) in full says, “Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance.”

I remember this one time—I think it was my first time making cookies. Listen, I’m not exactly sure what happened—maybe too much butter or something—but those cookies spread and burnt like nothing I had ever seen before.

After that, I believe it was a long time before I made any more, but I did learn something that day… follow the recipe exactly when it comes to baking anything, because unlike cooking a meal, it is less forgiving.

Lessons are learned every day; let’s feel free to adapt as we go.

My family likes to watch YouTube videos, and there are those that show people failing terribly. We watch that and think, “Wow, that was dumb,” and sometimes we say, “So-and-so (usually one of us in the house) would do that.” It’s funny because we can watch something happen and apply that to ourselves, but also learn from others on what not to do.

But I have to say this—I’m so glad the video isn’t running when I do some pretty ridiculous things, because I’m afraid I might end up on one of those videos.

More often than not, I have stated over my adulthood, “I’m glad social media wasn’t around when I was younger.”

That is the truth. I can learn my lessons without them going viral.

We learn and we grow either from what we do or from what others do.

Sometimes God’s lessons come in unexpected ways—a challenge, a conversation, a change we didn’t see coming. But every moment is a classroom where we’re listening for His voice. Maybe He’s teaching you to forgive, to wait, or to rest. When we let the Spirit guide us, even small lessons lead to big growth. Proverbs 1:5 says to “receive guidance,” and that starts with being willing to say, “Lord, what are You showing me here?”

The scripture of Proverbs 1:5 (NLT) says, “Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance.”

I think what bothers me the most is that I have walked through something, and I’ve learned the lesson, but then that same thing could come back around, and I think I’m doing all the right things, but God has other plans, and there is a different aspect that I need to learn from.

This is where I question things sometimes, like why do I need to go through it again? Why couldn’t I just learn all the things all at once?

Of course, I hear God say to me… because it wasn’t time for you to learn that just yet.

God knows what is best for us and when we need to learn something, so even though you may have to experience the same thing over again, keep in mind that there is always something to learn out of it.

In the Bible, there is a scripture that asks God to point out things in us that we need to change.

Be ready for that.

I often picture it like this—our hearts and minds are filled with doors, and God will have to go to every one of those areas, open each door, and show us things in them. When He does, He will guide us in healing and renewal.

The lessons that we will come out with will be so full of transformation that we will not be able to deny God’s work in our lives. From there, we can share with others what God has done and how He can change them as well.

Learning from God transforms us from the inside out so that we are then able to speak of His goodness in our lives and bring others to Him—it’s our testimony.

Here’s the thing about learning something new—it doesn’t always look exciting at first. But over time, God uses what we’ve learned to strengthen our walk and prepare us for what’s next. Every season, every experience, every stretch has purpose. So, whether you’re learning something big or small right now, remember this: God’s your teacher, and He’s patient with the process.

Stay teachable—because God’s always got something new to show you.
