Our Heart’s Desire.
Whether it’s something you’ve been longing for or a deep hope within, the Bible has a lot to say about what’s in our hearts and how God shapes our desires.
We all have things we want in life, but how do we know if what we desire is in line with God’s plan for us? And how do we find peace when the things we want don’t happen right away?
Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” What a perfect reminder that when we align our hearts with God, He helps us discover what our true desires are.
What’s something that’s been on your heart lately?
So, let’s dive deeper into Psalm 37:4 which says, "Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” This verse doesn’t mean God gives us everything we want right away. Instead, it means when we seek Him first, He shapes our desires to match His will.
I have to say that before I really understood that verse I was leaning on my own expectations and because of that I would experience a lot of hurt and discouragement.
Often, we may feel like our desires aren’t being met, or that God isn’t hearing us. But the more time we spend with God—through prayer, worship, and reading His Word—the more our hearts change. We start to desire what He desires for us.
God knows what’s best for us, even better than we know ourselves. When we trust Him with our hearts, He directs our desires toward things that are good for us and glorify Him.
How have you seen God reshape your desires? Have you ever wanted something, but over time, realized God had something even better in mind for you?
He has made my thoughts and desires so different that than used to be and yes there have been so many times where I wanted something but when it came down to it and I had the chance to get it I would often change my mind because it didn’t seem necessary anymore.
We’ve all experienced the feeling of unfulfilled desires, and it can be discouraging. But God is with us in those moments. Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”
Sometimes, we pray and wait, and it seems like the things we long for aren’t happening. It’s easy to get frustrated or question why. But often, God’s timing is different from ours. He may be preparing us for something greater or teaching us patience and trust.
There have been times in my own life where I’ve prayed for something and didn’t see it happen right away. Looking back, I can see how God used that waiting period to grow my faith and prepare me for the next season and I am so thankful for that waiting now, because I can see the why.
Have you looked back and realized how God used your waiting period for growth? When seasons of waiting come now are you more prepared because you know that God’s timing is so important, so the waiting doesn’t seem so bad. I know I have learned over the years due to those experiences.
God wants to bless us in ways that are meaningful and lasting. It may not always look the way we expect, but when we trust Him, we’ll find that His desires for us lead to true fulfillment and joy. We seek things to fill us all the time and, in all seasons, and we just need to seek the Lord first to fill that desire that we have.
Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us of this, it says, “For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” God’s desires for us are always good.
While we may have our own desires, God has plans for us that are even better than we can imagine. He desires for us to live lives full of purpose, joy, and peace. When we surrender our own will and desires to Him, we open ourselves up to the incredible things He has in store.
So, as you think about the things you desire trust the Lord and know that He will take care of you as you follow Him with all your heart. His plans are much better and greater than ours.
God shapes our desires, and we can stand firm in the trust we have in Him when they aren’t fulfilled right away, and how His plans for us are always good.
As we go through life, it’s important to remember that God is the author of our desires. When we delight in Him and seek His will, He helps us discover the things that will truly bring us joy and purpose.
Let’s close with this verse in Psalm 20:4 which says, “May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.” As we align our desires with God’s, we can trust that He will guide us in the right direction.
