Greener Grass

We’ve all had those moments of looking at someone else’s life and thinking, "Wow, I wish I had what they have." But is the grass really greener over there, or do we just need to water our own? Let’s dig into it today!
Our Scripture for today is Philippians 4:11–12 (NLT):"Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little."
Have you ever scrolled through social media and felt like everyone else has it all together? Yeah… me either.
We see picture-perfect families, dream jobs, and that flawless ‘grass’ we think we’re missing. But what if contentment isn’t about what we have, but about focusing on what we already do have?
Filters, edits, and highlight reels—social media gives us a curated version of life, not the full picture. So why are we comparing our behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel? It isn’t fair to ourselves.
Comparing is something we all do, yet the Bible tells us that God made each of us, and because of that, we are special, important, and enough. But we have a hard time believing it. I know I do.
Let’s take time to ask God to help us see ourselves through His eyes and not through the world’s.
Paul tells us in Philippians that he learned the secret to being content in all situations.
Contentment starts with being thankful for where you are and what you have. When we thank the Lord for what He has provided us with right now, we can find ourselves feeling more content and fulfilled.
What’s one thing in your life right now that you might be overlooking because you’re focused on someone else’s ‘greener’ grass?
Maybe the grass isn’t greener on the other side. Oftentimes, we’re seeking the next thing to bring us happiness, when what we really need is to be thankful for what we already have and where we are.
Have you ever chased something you thought would make you happier, only to realize you had everything you needed all along?
What’s one way you can nurture and appreciate what God’s already given you today?
Sometimes it’s not just about what we think we’re missing—it’s about trusting that God has us exactly where we need to be.
I remember a time when I thought life would be better if I could just get to the next stage. But looking back, I see God had me right where I needed to be. Have you ever been in that spot?
When we think about the grass being greener, we need to remember that comparison is the thief of joy. That’s because when we compare, we lose sight of our own blessings.
When you get to the junior high age—you know, 11, 12, 13—you start noticing others a lot more. At least that’s when it started for me. But you know what I’ve noticed these days? Kids notice others, but they don’t seem to overly compare like I used to.
I find that fascinating because I know that’s probably not true. I’m sure there’s just as much comparison as there once was, but it’s different now because of social media.
So much of it is said behind a keyboard instead of behind closed doors.
That tells me that the enemy has upped his game—and now the world compares itself to the world.
We have to be aware of who we are in Christ and not compare ourselves to others.
What’s something in your life right now that you might be overlooking because of comparison?
God’s plan for you isn’t about chasing someone else’s journey—it’s about embracing yours.
Have you ever looked at someone and thought, "Man, they have it all together"—at least from the outside? That’s the thing: we don’t see everything. We can find ourselves chasing something we don’t have the full picture of, and in that, we can lose sight of what we should be doing—and what God has for us.
What’s one area of your life where you can choose contentment today?
We know that contentment isn’t always easy. It takes work. But when we trust God’s plan, we find peace.
That peace through God is where true contentment comes from. When we know who God is, and that we can trust Him wholly, we start to see life a little differently.
There’s an old saying: "Keepin’ up with the Joneses." It’s about how someone is always trying to keep up with someone else, instead of focusing on where they are and being content with what they have—and who they have.
So instead of looking at what we don’t have, what if we celebrate what we do?Whether it’s friendships, family, or faith, God has already blessed us more than we realize.
The world tells us we need more to be happy. But God tells us we are already enough.
Where do you need to trust Him more today?
Instead of chasing someone else’s green grass, take a moment to water yourself. Trust that God has you exactly where you need to be.
Remember: True contentment isn’t found in what we don’t have, but in trusting God with what we do.
So, before you wish for something ‘greener,’ take a look at what’s already growing in your own backyard.
