Today’s topic is something we all struggle with—balance. Life pulls us in so many directions—work, family, church, responsibilities, and personal time. If we’re not careful, we can get overwhelmed, burned out, or end up neglecting the things that truly matter. But God calls us to live a life of order and peace, not chaos and exhaustion.
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people.” — 1 Corinthians 14:33
If you feel like life is spinning out of control, stick with me today. We’re going to explore how to find balance—not just in our schedules, but in our hearts and minds.
Balance Isn’t About Doing Everything—It’s About Doing the Right Things
Balance Begins with Priorities
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” — Matthew 6:33-34
When God is first, everything else falls into place.
Make a list of your top priorities and compare them to how you actually spend your time.
Is your schedule reflecting what truly matters to you?
Jesus Modeled Balance
We need to learn when to say no and when to step away.
Even Jesus, with all He had to do, took time to rest and be with the Father.
“But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” — Luke 5:16
Schedule intentional quiet time with God each day, just like Jesus did.
How often do you prioritize rest and time with God?
The Danger of Overcommitment
Saying yes to everything can lead to exhaustion and stress. We need to be realistic in setting expectations for our lives and schedules.
“It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.” — Psalm 127:2
God doesn’t call us to do it all—He calls us to be faithful in what He gives us.
Before committing to something, ask: "Is this God's best for me right now?"
Do you struggle with saying no? Why or why not?
Balance Isn’t Just About Schedules—It’s About Our Hearts
When our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life are out of balance, it affects everything else. We need to learn to balance our inner life.
Balancing Faith and Feelings
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” — Proverbs 3:5-6
Feelings are real, but they shouldn’t dictate our faith.
Trusting God means choosing faith even when emotions are overwhelming.
When emotions rise, pause and ask, “What does God’s Word say about this?”
Do you tend to react based on feelings or faith?
Balancing Work and Rest
Rest is not laziness—God designed it for our good.
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’” — Matthew 11:28
We often resist rest because we tie our worth to productivity. We think we need to finish our checklist before resting. Sometimes, we feel like we haven’t done enough to deserve rest, so we keep working and volunteering until we feel content.
But when we go to God before even starting, we realize that rest is necessary. Even as we work, we can have peace, or we may find that it’s actually okay to rest, no matter where we are in our tasks.
Rest looks different for everyone, but we need to schedule a true Sabbath—a day to rest and recharge spiritually and physically.
Do you allow yourself to truly rest, or do you feel guilty when you do?
A Lesson in Balance
Let’s look at a time when life was out of balance.
When I was in college, I was the stage manager for the school musical and was also asked to help a friend with stage managing for her project in one of her music courses. I really didn’t have time, but because I didn’t want to let her down, I said yes.
Well, things happened, and I ended up dropping the ball due to my schedule. This affected our friendship because I committed to something I couldn’t follow through on. My life was out of balance, and it showed.
But God revealed my mistake, and after months of work, our friendship was okay again. When we don’t take time to seek the Lord, we miss out on His wisdom. His plans are always better than ours, and He helps us keep the balance.
“Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act.” — Psalm 37:7a
Write down one area in your life that needs more balance and ask God for wisdom.
What’s one small change you can make today to find better balance?
Living a Balanced Life
Time is a gift—we are responsible for how we use it.
“Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.” — Ephesians 5:16-17
If we don’t intentionally plan time with God, distractions will take over.
I read this quote:
"You have a choice regarding where you focus your energy. You have a choice in what you live for." — Jennie Allen
We do have a choice. The time we have needs to be spent in a way that honors God.
Start your day by asking, “God, how do You want me to spend my time today?”
Do you feel in control of your time, or does your time control you?
Avoiding Distractions
“Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.” — Proverbs 4:25-27
Not everything that looks good is God’s best for you.
Social media, endless tasks, and busyness can keep us from what truly matters.
Set limits on distractions—whether it's social media, TV, or overcommitments.
Trusting God to Hold Everything Together
Balance isn’t about perfect schedules—it’s about trusting God with our time and responsibilities.
“Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.” — Psalm 37:3-5
When we put everything in His hands, He helps us carry the load.
Start and end your day with a simple prayer of surrender:
"God, I trust You with my time, my work, and my rest."
What’s one thing you need to surrender to God to find better balance?
Today, we talked about the importance of balance—prioritizing what matters, making time for rest, and trusting God to lead us.
A balanced life isn’t about doing everything—it’s about doing what God has called you to do with peace and purpose. Let’s trust Him with our schedules, our hearts, and our time.
Balance isn’t found in doing more—it’s found in surrendering more to God.
Take some time today to seek balance and rest in God.
