Feeling Blah?

Whether it’s the weather, the laundry pile, or just plain ol’ life, sometimes our hearts and minds just feel stuck in neutral.

But even in the middle of that fog, God is still with us—offering hope, energy, and a little bit of joy. So, let’s shake off the blahs—or at least laugh through them—together.

We’re getting honest about those blah days. Let’s stop pretending we’re always on top of our game. God isn’t scared of our “meh”—He meets us right in the middle of it.

Psalm 42:11 (NLT) – “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God!”

Not every day is going to be filled with fireworks and deep purpose. Some days are just peanut butter on toast, missing socks, and staring at the wall. But naming it helps. Don’t fight it—just recognize where you are and invite God into it.

Ever have that feeling where you’re not sure if you’re tired, bored, sad, or just need a snack?

That’s the blah zone. And it’s okay! Life isn’t supposed to be high-energy all the time. Even Jesus rested and stepped away from the crowds. Maybe we need to give ourselves permission to pause, too.

I’ve had many moments of just trying to motivate myself to do something. Not because I was sad—just blah and not really feeling the day. And sometimes, all it takes is a deep breath, a good playlist, and a reminder that this mood won’t last forever.

Psalm 42 says, “Why so downcast, O my soul?” That’s biblical proof that even faithful people feel off sometimes. But the key? “I will put my hope in God.” Even when we don’t feel it—we can still choose to hope.

Sometimes all we have to hold onto is that hope. That thought of seeing someone or accomplishing something—that hope can help us get up, get out, and shift our mood.

If we try, even when we don’t feel like it, we can find ourselves moving out of that blah feeling. So get up and just do something—it’ll help.

If you’re still feeling blah, you’re in good company. But now we’re shifting gears—let’s talk about how to gently move out of that fog and back into focus, without forcing it.

Sometimes the way out of the blah is through the little things—hot coffee, clean sheets, or a random dance party in your kitchen. God created joy, and He’s not above using the small stuff to lift our spirits.

Psalm 42:11 (NLT) – “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again—my Savior and my God!”

Motion changes emotion. Go for a walk, stretch, or do that awkward shoulder shimmy that makes your kids roll their eyes.

The other day we went to work out and my husband didn’t really want to go, but afterward, he said he was glad he did—it made him feel better. That’s how it is sometimes.

The motions don’t have to be big—just get moving. Even small actions can kick-start your heart again.

When we’re feeling blah, we can think the best thing for us is to keep to ourselves—and that may be true, but I wouldn’t suggest long-term isolation. Talk to someone—a friend, your spouse, even your dog.

Saying out loud, “I just feel off today,” can be incredibly freeing. And often, that’s the first step toward feeling better.

Making a connection with someone can brighten your day.

Let’s be real—sometimes we feel blah because we haven’t laughed in a while. Watch a funny video, read a corny joke, or just let yourself be silly. God gave us humor on purpose—it’s one of His best gifts.

I remember one time I was having a week, and I needed a change. So I told my kids we were going to crank up some music and just dance around. I don’t dance—it is not my thing—but I can tell you this: it changed my mood because we ended up laughing and just having a good time together.

Let’s start winding down with some grace. Not the graceful ballerina kind—more like the “I spilled my coffee but I’m still smiling” kind, that more my speed. We’re learning that it’s okay to have off days, as long as we don’t stay stuck in them.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes my offness—I know that’s not a word, but we’re going with it—is so bad that I just laugh and make fun of myself.

And you know what? That’s a great way to show ourselves some grace—by not being so serious.

Some days are blah because of the weather, or just life. It doesn’t mean you’re in sin or off track. God made us human—so give yourself permission to be one. Not every day has to be a mountaintop moment.

Gratitude doesn’t erase the blah, but it gives it less power. Try naming three things you’re thankful for right now—bonus points if one of them is snacks. (These points don’t go to anything, but it’s fun.)

My three:

  1. Water (I drink a lot of it)

  2. Pencils (because I make mistakes)

  3. Being able to talk to God at any moment

Let’s not be our own worst critics. If today is a low-energy, unmotivated, cereal-for-dinner kind of day—that’s okay. Be kind to yourself. The blahs will pass, but your heart needs grace in the meantime.

But what if the ‘blah’ days are actually a gentle invitation to rest? To slow down? Maybe God’s using them not to frustrate us, but to quiet us. He’s still present, even in the fog. Especially in the fog.

Feeling blah doesn’t make you broken—it makes you human. And God is still close, even in the “meh.” So take a deep breath, sip your coffee (as much as you need), and know that brighter days are ahead.
