Embracing Quiet Time with the Lord

Quiet time is essential to who we are and how we connect with God. Setting aside time with the Lord helps us refocus and push away the noise and distractions that the world brings.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”

The purpose of quiet time with God is to develop a personal relationship with Him, where we can listen and open our hearts. It’s similar to connecting with a close friend: when we talk with them, we’re intentional about hearing all they have to say.

It’s important to note that quiet time isn’t about checking something off our to-do lists, like “Oh, that’s done; on to the next thing.” Setting aside time with the Lord is about building intimacy with the One who knows us and created us.

James 4:8 says, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.”

One of the biggest challenges with quiet time is actually preparing for it. With busy schedules, we might wonder, How can I make time for one more thing?

But when we’re intentional about setting time aside, it’s helpful to choose a place and time where distractions are minimal. We also need a plan — like what we’ll read, study, or pray about. Having a plan helps minimize distractions, even those within ourselves.

This time is a chance to sit with our Heavenly Father and have a meaningful conversation with Him.

Matthew 6:6 says, “But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”

Sometimes, we need to practice being in the quiet because we’re so used to the constant noise of this world. Quiet time is important not only for our spiritual health but also for our mental and physical well-being. Learning to quiet our minds helps us hear God’s voice more easily. When we’re deliberate about getting into Scripture, we can hear His voice more clearly because we’re becoming more in tune with who He is.

Isaiah 30:15 says, “This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.”

One way I connect and stay focused is by journaling. I write about my struggles and prayers to keep my thoughts centered on God. When I’m walking, cleaning, or cooking, I turn on worship music to use my time to draw closer to the Lord in every way I can.

How do you take time to be with the Lord? How do you hear from Him and learn from Him?

I love Psalm 119 because it’s all about praising and connecting with the Lord. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.”

Some benefits of consistent quiet time with the Lord are that we receive peace, wisdom, and spiritual strength. We learn to identify and understand things more clearly because we’ve learned to turn to the Lord and see from His perspective.

God is always at work, changing us from the inside out and empowering us to live a Christ-centered life.

Philippians 4:7 says, “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 62:5 says, “Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.”

I encourage you to deepen your practice of setting aside quiet time. God is with you on every step of this life journey and wants to meet and talk with you. Know that He is always eager to meet with you.
