Come To Me

Today, I want to talk about one of the most comforting invitations Jesus ever gave us.
In Matthew 11:28–29, He says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
We live in a world that constantly tells us to hustle harder, carry more, and keep it all together. But Jesus flips that message upside down. He says, “You don’t have to do this alone. Bring it all to Me.” Whether it’s stress, worry, or just the weight of everyday life—He’s inviting us to lay it down and find real rest in Him.
Let’s dive into what it means to answer His call: “Come to Me.”
At what stage in life do we think that we have to solely depend on ourselves?
Is this something we’ve learned by the world’s standards, or is it an innate thing where we seek independence and try to show everyone around us that we can handle all the things?
I know when we are toddlers, we come to the point where we start saying, “I can do it.” Then we become teens and that independence grows stronger. Then we’re adults, and we feel we have to do it all on our own. Sometimes we feel the need for help, but we never ask.
It’s interesting how we get to that point when all along God has been saying, “Come to Me and let Me help you with your whole life.” But we just don’t acknowledge that.
Our need for independence has clouded our need for dependence on God.
When we’re learning to ride a bike, we need our parents to teach us, and we depend on their hand on that bike until we’re ready to ride on our own. Once we get the hang of it, we just go and never look back, not even thinking about how we once wished our parents’ hand was still there to steady us.
The same thing happens when we’re struggling in life. We want God’s hand there, and we want that comfort. But when life is good, we just go, and sometimes we don’t think about His hand being on us. Then life gets heavy, and we struggle. But God says, “Come to Me and let Me help you.” He wants us to remember that His hand is always there, ready to help.
Have you ever met someone who can fall asleep anywhere?
I remember when I was younger, I was at a concert and my little sister fell asleep with all that noise around her. I’ve always been amazed how someone could find calm and peace enough to sleep in the middle of all that.
When I think about it, that’s the kind of peace I want in life. I want to be so immersed in God’s peace that nothing bothers me, and I can just go about life.
Our Scripture today, Matthew 11:28–29, tells us that we can find rest for our souls with God.
Lord, I come to You, and I seek the peace needed to calm my soul in all situations.
Have you ever tried to carry all the groceries in at once—or watched someone try? When we do it, we think we’ve got it all and it’ll work out fine. But when we watch others, we think, “They shouldn’t do that. They should ask for help, because they’re gonna drop something.”
I wonder if that’s how God looks at us sometimes.
We think we have it all under control and can carry everything, but God is watching us and thinking, “If only they would ask for help, they wouldn’t drop anything, because I’m right here just waiting for them to come to Me.”
In Matthew 11:28–29, He says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Have you ever been so distracted that you have a hard time remembering what you just did? Sometimes it’s because there’s a lot going on, and sometimes it’s just because we’re easily distracted with no reason at all.
I get it if there’s a lot happening—but when there’s no reason, that’s when I get frustrated. I want to know the cause. But instead of leaning into God and letting Him carry us through, we just keep going, distracted.
No, you may not feel weary or heavy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still come to God—even in those distracted moments.
We don’t need a reason to seek the Lord. We just need to do it all the time and in every season. There may be something beneath the surface causing the distraction that only He can help with.
I think it’s funny how when someone is telling us all about their struggles, we listen and then say, “Well, have you prayed about it?”
But when things are going on in our own lives, do we pray about it first?
We’re always better at giving advice than following it ourselves. We know the first thing someone else should do is go to God—but why is that sometimes the last thing we do?
I think a lot of it has to do with what we’re going through. We try to fix and figure it all out first, and then we go to God. But in reality, when we’ve gone to God first, we’ve found that we get through things more easily than we would on our own.
Let’s not forget the good God has done. Let’s remember that we can and should go to Him first.
Matthew 11:28–29 says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Life throws a lot at us, and right now, we’re in a season of school, sports, and family gatherings. Those things can bring tiredness, burdens, and obligations.
Let’s remember our Scripture for today and hold on to the words that Jesus said to us: Come to Me.
I think the biggest takeaway of the phrase “Come to Me” is that we are not alone.
It’s about knowing who God is and believing that when He says, “Come to Me and let Me carry your burdens,” He truly will.
When we truly understand that God always does what He says, then we’re more likely to come to Him confidently with all that we are and all that we carry.
It’s like going to a trusted friend with all your baggage, knowing that you’ll be heard without judgment and met with unconditional love.
God is the One who provides, fills, and helps us with all things.
Learn to trust that what God says is true. Come to Him.
Whatever you’re carrying today—big or small, heavy or light—you don’t have to hold it alone. Don’t try to outrun it or bury it. Go to God and let Him give you exactly what you need. We can only do so much before we can’t go on anymore.
The rest your soul is craving isn’t found in a vacation, a nap, or even a perfect plan. It’s found in Him.
Fill all your uncertainties with God. Our hope in Him is anchored in our faith in Jesus.
Take the time to seek the Lord, sit with Him, talk to Him. Come to Him.
Let’s circle back to that beautiful invitation from Jesus: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Notice He doesn’t say, “Fix yourself first” or “Get it all figured out.” He simply says, “Come.”
So, as you go about your day, remember this: Jesus is waiting with open arms, ready to take your burdens and give you peace. All you have to do is take that first step and answer His invitation: Come to Me.
