More Than Covered: Understanding Atonement

Today we’re talking about More Than Covered: Understanding Atonement

Now, that may sound a little heavy for a morning show—but stick with me! It’s not just a theology term—it’s the reason you and I can walk around today full of joy, forgiveness, and hope. Think of it as the bridge between our brokenness and God’s presence, made possible by Jesus.

Romans 5:11 (NLT) — “So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.”

We’re breaking down this beautiful, mysterious, powerful concept of atonement. It’s more than just ‘forgiveness’—it’s God saying, “Let me fix the relationship.”

Picture a canyon with you on one side and God on the other. That’s sin. Atonement? It’s the bridge. And Jesus built it with the cross. It’s like God said, “They can’t get to Me, so I’ll go to them.” Have you ever had a friend who went out of their way to fix something between you? That’s the heart of atonement.

I remember a time when I felt like I had to earn God’s love again—like if I prayed long enough or did enough good, I’d make up for my mistakes. I’ve also been the kind of person who felt I needed to overly prove I was sorry, like I had to really show it to make things right. But grace says the atonement through Jesus is already done. We can ask for forgiveness and believe that God has done just that—without us having to prove anything. What freedom when we stop striving and just receive it!

It’s easy to hear “Jesus died for your sins,” and get so used to it that it becomes background noise. But today, slow down. Breathe it in. Truly believe it. That bridge, that covering, that restoration—it’s real, it’s personal, and it’s finished.

It wasn’t just something that applied years ago. It applies today and forever. So be thankful for it every day and let’s really lean into the love God has for us.

We’re looking at how the atonement isn’t just a one-time event in history—it’s an everyday gift. From shame to confidence, fear to peace, atonement touches every part of our lives.

We’ve all had moments where we think, “God can’t really want me.” But Romans 5:11 reminds us that because of Jesus, we’re friends with God. Not just servants or tolerated houseguests. Friends. That’s atonement in action—bringing us close.

Romans 5:11 (NLT) — “So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.”

God’s forgiveness isn’t on a punch card. It doesn’t run out. Because of Jesus’ atonement, your worst day isn’t your identity.

Sometimes we harbor mistakes, shame, guilt, and so much more—but God never wanted that for us. That’s why He sent His Son to die for us. And in that, we can be free. Atonement sets us free. So if you’re in a place where you feel captive, ask God to forgive you—and also ask Him to help you feel free from all that’s holding you down.

We’re talking about atonement, and here’s the thing—atonement isn’t just something to believe in; it’s something to live from. When we accept that we’re fully forgiven and reconciled, we walk differently. Freer. Lighter. With more compassion. Let’s live like the forgiven people we are.

Let’s believe that we are actually forgiven and walk strong, knowing that God is with us. He has forgiven us. And in Him, we live and breathe. He is our Savior and our strength.

Now that we know what atonement is and why it matters, let’s talk about how we can share that message. Because if atonement brought us back to God, maybe He wants to use us to help someone else find their way, too.

I know that sharing our story is a powerful way to show people what God does and how Jesus’ atonement for our sins really changes lives.

Ever notice how people are drawn to those who are deeply at peace? That’s because the weight of the world can be too much, and so many are just seeking peace. When we live like we’ve been forgiven, people notice. They may not know the word “atonement,” but they can feel the love behind it. So when others want to be around you, it might be because they’re seeing Jesus in you—and they want the peace you carry.

If God stooped down to make peace with us, maybe we can do the same with others. It might mean saying “I forgive you” before it’s asked. Or offering kindness where it’s not deserved. That’s how we pass on the heart of the cross.

Let’s be honest—some people are hard to love. But if Jesus only atoned for the “easy” people, where would we be? His sacrifice was for everyone. That doesn’t mean we’re doormats—but it does mean we carry grace in our pockets, ready to give.

Today, let’s commit to living as reconciled people. Not with guilt or fear, but with joy and purpose. You are forgiven. You are loved. And you have been brought near. That’s the good news—go live like it!

What a beautiful truth to carry with us today—because of Jesus, we are made right with God. Atonement is not just a theological idea; it’s the very reason we can live in freedom, walk in peace, and love without fear.
