Psalm 98:4-6 - Shout to the Lord, all the earth; break out in praise and sing for joy! Sing your praise to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and melodious song, with trumpets and the sound of the ram’s horn. Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King!
Music is something we all listen to and enjoy. There are so many different styles, and it seems like there are endless ways to write songs.
Music is a gift that God gives to people. It is mentioned first in the book of Genesis, chapter 4, in the Bible, where Jubal, a descendant of Adam and Eve, is credited as the inventor of musical instruments. However, when we think about music in the Bible, we probably think of David. He wrote many Psalms and played instruments. Additionally, he organized the music of the Levites and ensured they were well-trained.
In Psalm 95:1-3, it says, "Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him. For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods."
When we sing praise to the Lord, we show reverence to Him, connect with Him, and acknowledge that He is the King above all.
Ever hear a song that takes you back to a specific time and place? Music connects us deeply. There is an emotional attachment that occurs. This is why some have a particular song for specific moments. Music transports and connects us.
Scripture communicates the power and importance of music in many ways. Music is essential to the church as we use it to worship the Lord. It helps us connect to God and worship Him for all His goodness and glory.
Psalm 100:1-5 says, "Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation."
You can go to God in all situations and thank Him and praise Him.
Music helps us convey what we may think or feel in a way nothing else can. The melodic movement of a song can change the way we feel.
I had this one album I would listen to when I was walking through grief because the words and the music really helped me connect with the Lord and speak to Him through that because the whole album really just said what I was feeling.
Music is God-given and important, and when we worship God, it connects us with Him on a deeper level.
Psalm 96:1-4 says, "Sing a new song to the Lord! Let the whole earth sing to the Lord! Sing to the Lord; praise his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves. Publish his glorious deeds among the nations. Tell everyone about the amazing things he does. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! He is to be feared above all gods."
We thank you and praise you, Lord, for all you do. You provide and lead in a way that only you can. Thank you, Lord, for loving us so deeply.
