Words of the Wise

James 3:13 - If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.

We all have been given words of wisdom from others. Some that have been passed down from generation to generation.

My grandmother used to tell me not to go to bed with dishes in the sink. She also used to say don’t go to bed angry. I’m sure there are more, and I know we all have them; do we apply that wisdom? Some yes and some no.

When we read the Bible there is so much wisdom in the words that are there and I’m sure we apply some but not all that we read.

If we are willing to follow the wisdom given to us by others and God, then we are willing to learn from those who have gone before and maybe understand what we are going through. So, to take in what is being shared and apply it is something I know I need to work on.

Listen, apply, share.

Here is an example of wisdom that I found when looked up inspirational stories yesterday. This is from Wendy who lives in Wisconsin she said, “My mom was a woman of few words, but one phrase of hers that stuck was “see the work,” which meant see what needs to be done without being told. If toys are left out, put them away. If dishes are being washed, grab a towel and dry. If litter is strewn along the road, pick it up as you walk. I’ve shared “see the work” with countless students, and our halls are always clean, and the chairs stacked by the end of the day. Simple advice from a quiet woman.”

This is great! I often think that especially while raising my kids…. If you see it why you didn’t do it. The story really does help and maybe it’s something we all can now share and even do. If you see something that needs to be done, do it. Listen, apply, share.

James 3:17-18 - But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.

We need to focus on the wisdom God gives us when we read it and when we ask for it. You can read the proverbs and follow some of those as well. But when we listen and do what the Lord says that is following the words of the most wise.
