Can we plan ahead and still have faith in God?

At first glance, it would seem counterintuitive. However, not only can we have faith and still plan ahead but the bible actually addresses this. Proverbs 21:5 "The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty."

We'd actually be irresponsible to not plan ahead, reckless even. In fact, if we were to throw caution completely to the wind, it would border on tempting God. We're expected to be good stewards with everything God had bestowed on us. And those around us (our family, etc., are affected by our decision making) are impacted by our choices.

Jesus, while relaying the cost of discipleship, uses an interesting parable in Luke 14:28 "For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?"

Now faith as defined in Hebrews 11:1 "...is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."

One of the marks of a true Christian is being responsible.
